Pounds and Pence

transcription text for lsd page

The surviving Caldwell ledgers all pre-date UK currency decimalisation that took place on 15th February 1971. Under the old currency of pounds, shillings and pence the pound was made up of 240 pennies (denoted by the letter 'd' from the Latin 'denarius'), with twelve pennies to a shilling and twenty shillings (denoted by 's' from the Latin 'solidus') to a pound.

Consequently all plants mentioned in the ledgers are priced in shillings and pence (s and d) and the currency totals on each page are in pounds, shillings and pence (£ s d).
